Printmaking

Printmaking - creating an original matrix from which multiple images are made on paper.

The art of Printmaking encompasses many different forms: Engraving, Mezzotint, Drypoint by Albrecht Durer and Rembrandt, are made by drawing on metal plates with different tools. Etchings are made by drawing on a metal plate on which a special ground is applied then placing the plate in an acid bath. After the ground is removed the plate is inked for a press. Aquatint are also made with a ground however the process is tonal like a paint brush wash instead of line drawing. Lithography involves a stone plate, grease pencils and a press. Screen printing made famous by Andy Warhol uses fabric plates instead of metal or stone. Woodblocks (Woodcuts) are the oldest printmaking technique dating from the fifth century. In this process, drawings are carved from blocks of wood. Ink is applied to the Woodblocks. Woodcuts are a relief process, the area carved away is the area that remains white or ink free.
