Paintings - Watercolor

Since watercolor art can be dated to stone age cave paintings, it is perhaps one on the oldest forms of creative expression known to man. Watercolor paintings are produced with color pigments suspended in a water base and applied to paper by two different methods or styles. The pure watercolor method does not incorporate the use of white pigment, rather the white of the paper is used to create the highlights or light tones in the image. The other watercolor painting method includes the use of white pigment. One of the most famous and accomplished English watercolor artist was JMW Turner (1775-1851). JMW Turner used white pigment in his phenomenal landscape watercolor paintings. In the United States, three watercolor artist that have extreme notoriety are: Winslow Homer (1836-1910), Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) and Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009).

The discussion of watercolor fine art would not be complete without the mention of watercolor paintings in Asian art. The use of ink and a water wash which is then applied to silk or paper with a sable paintbrush has been the national means of artist expression for thousands of years.
